Hyperspermia: Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Sometimes a man’s body can make a little too much semen. This condition is called hyperspermia. Semen is the fluid that contains sperm. This fluid also contains some nutrient-rich fluids required for sperm to swim. Now, how much is too much? If the quantity of semen is more than 5–7 milliliters (ml), that’s hyperspermia.

What is Hyperspermia?

Sometimes a man’s body can make a little too much semen. This condition is called hyperspermia. Semen is the fluid that contains sperm. This fluid also contains some nutrient-rich fluids required for sperm to swim. Now, how much is too much? If the quantity of semen is more than 5–7 milliliters (ml), that’s hyperspermia.

This condition is not that common. Cases of other fertility-related issues are seen more often. In fact, hypospermia (a condition in which a man produces low semen volume) is more prevalent. Also, a large amount of semen is not one of the signs of high sperm count.

What are the Causes of Hyperspermia?

There are many causes of hyperspermia (high semen volume). It really depends on each person’s body type and medical history.

  1. Holding Back for a Long Time: Higher semen volumes might be released if you wait too long between ejaculations (releasing semen).
  2. Infections or Inflammation: Sometimes, an infection can cause more semen to be released. Swelling can also cause the same effect. These conditions affect semen production.
  3. Hormonal Imbalances: Abnormal hormone levels can change production. Testosterone is one such hormone. Other hormones also play a role in changes in semen production.
  4. Lifestyle Factors: How you live can sometimes add to the condition. For example, how much fluid you drink, what medicine you take, or what you eat.
  5. Medications: Certain drugs can result in high semen production, too. Testosterone, for example, can mess up semen production.

What are the Symptoms of Hyperspermia?

How do you know you are experiencing hyperspermia symptoms? Well, below are some signs to check for hyperspermia.

  • Increased Semen Volume: The first and most obvious symptom is when you observe too much semen coming out.
  • Delayed Ejaculation: If you are having trouble ejaculating, it might be a sign of hyperspermia. That simply means it takes too much time to release.
  • Getting Tired: Feeling exceptionally tired after having intercourse is also a symptom.
  • Problems with Urination: You may have to run to the washroom too frequently to urinate. You can also feel some pain during urination.
  • Lower Sperm Concentration: Sometimes, due to too much fluid, sperm concentration gets diluted.
  • Discomfort During Ejaculation: Some people experience discomfort while ejaculating. Although this is not a common symptom, it’s best to be cautious.
  • Semen Coloration: Notice if the semen is yellow-colored. This could be a symptom of hyperspermia.

How does it affect fertility?

Too much semen can sometimes affect fertility although, not always. It might dilute the sperm volume. This can make sperm swim poorly. That is what can hinder the ability to reach the egg. So, even with many sperm, it can be harder to get pregnant. Sometimes, there might be mild discomfort around the genital area. This could make a man avoid sex. Hyperspermia doesn’t always cause problems to the reproductive system.

Diagnosis of Hyperspermia

These are a few ways to diagnose hyperspermia:

  • Semen analysis: You’ll be asked to give a sample of your semen. You do this by masturbating or pulling out and ejaculating into a cup.
  • Lab Check: The lab will look at how many sperm there are (total sperm count). They’ll also check the sperm movement and quality.
  • Hormone Check: A blood test will be done next. This is to ensure you have enough testosterone (male hormone).
  • Imaging: Then lastly, an ultrasound might be done. This is to ensure the internal structures of your testicles (or some other parts) are fine.

What is the Treatment for Hyperspermia?

These are the treatments available for hyperspermia:

  • Vitro Fertilization IVF: This treatment helps in hyperspermia by fertilizing the egg with sperm outside the body.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Here, only one sperm is injected into an egg. This is a great treatment for hyperspermia.
  • Lifestyle Changes:  Certain changes in day-to-day life are also suggested. For example, a balanced diet, avoiding alcohol, etc., are advised.
  • Medication: In case your sperm count is low, you may be given certain medications. This helps increase sperm concentration.

What to Expect

Sometimes, you might not notice clear symptoms of hyperspermia. But, if you see a lot of semen when you ejaculate, it’s good to diagnose hyperspermia. It can be confusing and even cause some discomfort. While it’s usually not dangerous, it can sometimes make it harder to get someone pregnant.
